The Confederate army began their battle for control of the Western front with an early morning surprise attack. Union General Ulysses S. Grant was caught off guard, and pulled back his troops to Pittsburgh Landing on the Tennessee River. On the second day, Grant ordered a counter-attack, and the Union army aided by reinforcements, drove a battered Confederate army to retreat. Part of the historical comic book series "Epic Battles of the Civil War," which were produced by noted Historians in cooperation with the world-famous Marvel Entertainment Group.
