The most remembered battle of the Civil War. The South needed a major victory, especially one on Union soil. After Three days of bitter fighting, however, the Confederacy army was forced to retreat, never again to mount a major offensive. The human cost of Gettysburg was astounding. More than 51,000 men- 23,000 for the Union, 28,000 for the Confederates, almost one third of the men involved- were killed, wounded or missing.
